Lake Travis Fishing Report - December 20216,090 Readers Water Temp: 65 degrees Record high temperatures this month have kept the bass much more active and shallower than they normally are this time of year. As a result shallow water power fishing patterns have been my go-to way to maximize my client’s catch. I’ve been finding these late Fall bass by covering shallow water flats and points. When I do catch one, I usually catch a few more in the same area. A wide variety of baits have been producing including shakey head worms, Texas-rigged craws, swimbaits, underspins, and Alabama rigs. Keep an eye out for grass. Out of all of the years I’ve been fishing and guiding on Lake Travis, this is the first time I’ve actually seen grass in large quantities in the lake. Not sure exactly how the grass is taking root with the lake bottom being so hard and rocky but there is indeed some grass in the lake. The grass is not high but it can make presenting a shakey head, texas rig worm, or jig challenging. If you do get in an area that you think is holding bass but has grass on the bottom and they don’t want to chase a swimbait, try a weightless or light-weighted fluke or neko-rigged worm slowly worked around and through the grass. These baits tend to not hang up as much in that grass. When the water temperature gets into the low 60’s, bass will transition to their winter areas and fishing deep will become a dominant pattern. On sunny days, docks and marinas in and near deep water always produce. Ledges and points near creek and river channels are also high percentage areas. Carolina Rigs, jigs, shakey heads, and drop shots are always in my winter arsenal.
