Lake Travis Fishing Report - April 20193,809 Readers Water Temp: 63.0 degrees The multiple, seemingly continuous waves of cold fronts that have come through our area in March, and as late as April 1st, have kept water temperatures cooler than average for this time of year. This has definitely had an impact on the bass spawn on Lake Travis. That being said, the “Super Moon” on March 20th triggered the first major movement of bass shallow to spawn. Please keep in mind that shallow on Lake Travis is relative. Instead of suspending in river and creek channels over 100 ft. of water, shallow means they can now be found in 2 to 40 ft. of water. In past years, I’ve heard some reports from divers saying they’ve seen bass spawning in 30 ft. of water! Buck bass, mostly small, can be seen on beds all over the lake. Sight fishing for these “nest guarders” is a fun way to fish. Flukes, Texas-rigged craws, and drop shots cast up on beds have been successful in making these fish bite. Repeated casts are often required in order to find the sweet spot. While the bed may be 2 ft. in diameter, the eggs on the nest may only be on an area the size of a silver dollar. Weightless Flukes and wacky-rigged Senkos are also catching good numbers of fish. Target secondary points, docks, and brush in the backs of coves and pockets. Letting your bait sink for 5-10 seconds on the initial fall allows the lure time get to and stay in the strike zone longer, thus generating more strikes. The bigger fish are deep, and can be hard to find in numbers. Shaky head finesse worms and Carolina-rigged soft plastics worked slowly through brush and down ledges are the best for these fish. As the water temperature continues to rise, the shad spawn will really start to kick in, which means top water time on Lake Travis. April is historically a great top water month on the lake and expect it to be good again this year. I still have availability for April, so please call if you would like to book a trip!
