Boerne High School visits Rouse this Friday as they continue their 2009 football season. While the first-year school is good, Greyhound coach Dane Johnson knows they won’t be as good as last week’s opponent Lake Travis.

The Cavs scored 28 points in the first six minutes and eventually rolled to a 52-0 victory. Johnson is hoping the team can learn from that experience and use it in their remaining five games starting with this Friday’s contest.

“It will be nice to play teams that are more on our level,” Johnson said. “It was nice to play Lake Travis, we got to see the speed of the game at their level and now it’s time to adjust to that and take it into Friday night.”

Rouse is in the exact same boat as Vandegrift, an earlier opponent of Boerne’s. They are a brand new school that is comprised of freshman and sophomores and they are off to a 2-1 mark.

So far Rouse has played two games against JV teams and one against a varsity. They beat the Austin Academy JV and the Wimberley JV and lost to the Rockdale varsity.

Johnson said they’re young, but a solid team.

“They have two or three really good players,” he said. “Their line isn’t as good as Vandegrift’s or as good as our line, so that’s one place we hope we can take advantage of.”

The Hounds are 0-4, but have played three varsity teams as they field a team for the first time since 2007. Johnson said the tough opponents should help them with their remaining games and in the future.

“We’ve played some quality teams, three good varsity teams this year and we’re hoping these games will pay off,” he said. “It will pay off sooner or later, we just hope it’s sooner.”
