Many midcentury-modern homes fit the same mold: low ceilings and a vintage color scheme. Others, like this on-the-market Austin house at 4602 Ridge Oak Drive, were designed with before-their-time features, like this living room's 10-foot-high ceilings.

Dreamed up by architect Howard R. Barr — a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (FAIA) — as his own personal dwelling in 1950, it's now owned by his son. (Story continues below.)

While this three-bedroom, two-bath house is unique in its aesthetic, the centerpiece of the home might be best admired from the backyard. The home overlooks Lake Austin, the Pennybacker Bridge and an expanse of mature trees. The home offers dramatic panoramas from its living room, which is walled in by floor-to-ceiling glass.

Set on nearly an acre in Austin's Highland Park West subdivision, the 2,174-square-foot house backs up to the 216-acre Bright Leaf Preserve.
