Floodgates open at Highland Lakes

Local pilot Rick Winter flew over the Highland Lakes recently and took pictures of the dams releasing excess water from their floodgates.

The Highland Lakes area a chain of fresh water lakes in Central Texas formed by dams on the lower Colorado River. The area has been hit hard in recent weeks by heavy rains.

Flood operations continue on the Highland Lakes. Swift water and safety concerns have closed Lake LBJ, Lake Marble Falls, Lake Travis, Lake Austin, Lady Bird Lake and the Colorado River downstream from Longhorn Dam.

Lake Travis has risen to 121 percent full -- its highest level since July 2007. Lake Buchanan is at 94 percent full.
