Graveyard Point homeowners preparing for flooding

Homeowners along Lake Travis are preparing for flooding as Highland Lake dams are releasing water downstream.

Dewey Cooper moved to Graveyard Point 28 years ago. Since then, his house has flooded five times, the last time in 2007.

"In 2007, it was 10 feet over the house," Cooper said.

On Monday, the Lower Colorado River Authority opened multiple flood gates at Mansfield Dam. Their goal was to move some of the water in the flood pool of Lake Travis downstream.

Cooper said it did help by lowering the water about six inches Tuesday morning, but that will not be enough to keep his property from flooding if it continues to rain. He's started moving his belongings to higher ground.

"I moved three pickup loads and it will take me one phone call and everything in here will be gone within three to four hours," Cooper said.

His neighbor two doors down is also moving his stuff out.

"I have moved everything out to my friend's garage," Tony Reaves said. "I'm going to go upstairs at my friend's house, two floors up."

LCRA officials said that if you live on the lake, it is important to know what the lake levels are concerning your property. They also recommend looking at their Facebook and Twitter pages for updates and checking in with emergency management officials.
