Storms Dump Nearly Two Inches Of Rain Amid Drought

The Austin area got nearly two inches of rain early Tuesday morning, providing much-needed relief in the midst of drought conditions.

Lower Colorado River Authority officials reported the highest rainfall totals in Cedar Park, at 1.82 inches. Other substantive measurements include North Austin at Jolleyville with 1.6 inches recorded, Barton Creek with 1.65 inches and Lakeway near RM 620, with 1.55 inches recorded.

Pflugerville got its share too, at 1.30 inches.

KVUE-TV meteorologists suggest Tuesday’s pre-dawn soaker was in a sense a perfect storm, not in a dangerous way but because it came at a time when most people were not on the roadways but safely home.

The much-needed rainfall also came in the middle of a drought. What’s more, the more severe elements of the thunderstorms that had been widely predicted -- large hail and strong wind gusts -- didn’t fully materialize.

Tuesday’s rainfall was the most substantive for the area in nearly two months.
