Friday's forecast: Brutal cold roars across U.S.

The brutal cold will continue to roar across the central U.S. on Friday, as it slowly marches its way into the East and South.

High temperatures will only be in the teens and 20s for most of the northern Plains and northern Rockies, while temperatures in the central Plains will hover in the 30s. The cold air will sweep into the East by the weekend.

Snow will also be likely in the Rockies, while a wintry mix of snow, ice and rain will make for a dreary day in parts of Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico.

Thunderstorms are also possible in southern Texas and in the lower Mississippi Valley.

The Northeast, Great Lakes, Ohio Valley and the Southwest will also see rain on Friday.

Weather history for Nov. 22: In 1937, 9.7 inches of snow fell in Austin, Texas, which was the only snow recorded there that winter. In 1957, there was massive damage from strong Santa Ana winds in southern California.

In 1992, a tornado outbreak hit the Gulf Coast, with 93 twisters reported; 25 people were killed. In 2008, a record low temperature of 11 degrees was set in Syracuse, N.Y.
