The Boerne Champion tennis team is shooting for its fourth straight regional title this weekend after wiping out Kerrville Tivy 10-0 in last Saturday's District 28-4A Tournament finals.
The Chargers had also swept Medina Valley 10-0 in Friday's semifinals for the right to play Tivy and claim their fourth district championship in a row. Champion tennis coach Joey Cantu predicted Lake Travis and Alamo Heights would be the top Region IV seeds.
“The Chargers were in this same position last year,” Cantu noted. “Last year we defeated both teams to reach the state tournament, and we feel we're capable of doing the same, but it will take great team effort.”
The Boerne High School volleyball team went into Tuesday night's final District 26-3A match against visiting Wimberley needing either a win over the league-leading Lady Texans or a Navarro loss to second-place Fredericksburg that same night in order to make the playoffs.
Boerne and Navarro were both 6-5 and tied for third-place, but the Lady Hounds held the tiebreaker based on their season sweep of the Lady Panthers. Boerne could have claimed the district's final playoff seed last week with a victory over visiting Bandera (15-15, 4-7). The Lady Hounds had swept the fifth-place Lady Bulldogs in Bandera in the first round of district play, but it was Bandera wielding the brooms the second time around.
Bandera took the first game 15-18, held off Boerne for a 25-23 win in game two and sealed the match with a 25-19 victory in game three. Casey Drennan led Boerne with 10 assists and Kaylee Dreiss came up with nine digs. Callen Hamilton registered a team-high five kills and tied Kendall Snelling for the team lead with 2.5 blocked shots.
Boerne stayed in position to claim the third playoff seed on Friday with a 25-8, 25-6, 25-4 victory at last-place Hawkins; completing a season sweep. Mangiafico led Boerne with four kills and 12 aces, Drennan dished out nine assists and six digs and Kelsey Bustamante blocked eight shots.
If Boerne does get past Navarro and into the playoffs it would play a first-round match on either Halloween or November 1 against the runner-up team from District 25-3A.
The Boerne Champion volleyball team (27-11, 11-0) clinched the District 28-4A title more than a week ago and was looking to wrap up a second consecutive undefeated run through league play at Brennan Tuesday night.
The Lady Chargers swept McCollum (18-23, 3-8) last Friday, extending their district sweep streak to 23 matches dating back to last season. Claire Kreuz led Champion with 18 kills, four service aces and a blocked shot. Rachel Wallace dished out 41 assists and Emily Johnson accounted for 16 digs.
Champion will play either Buda Hays or Alamo Heights in the first round of the playoffs. The Lady Mules and Lady Rebels played Tuesday night, with third-place in District 27-4A going to the winner. The Lady Chargers will play the loser of that match next Monday or Tuesday.
The Boerne Geneva boys' cross country team ran away with the TAPPS 1A state title last weekend at Baylor University; placing five runners in the top eight for a team score of 23. Second-place Rainbow Hills finished far back at 152. Geneva's Jacob Ryan defended his individual state title with a time of 16:17.40. Logan Ward finished third, Jake Clifford placed fourth, Kade Leeder took seventh, and Christian Lipe captured eighth place.
“Jacob was running second behind Regents Academy until the halfway point in the race, where he began to build a lead,” Geneva Coach Jeff Crews said. “He was not going to be denied a second consecutive state title”
The two-time defending state champion Geneva girls finished fourth in their division, but Lady Eagle Maddie Inglish won the girls' individual race with a time of 13:20.4.
“The girls worked hard and gave their very best efforts,” Crews said.
Boerne Geneva fans also celebrated a victory in the school's first homecoming football game last Friday. The Eagles (6-2, 3-1) roared out to a 26-6 first-quarter lead over San Antonio Believers Academy (1-4, 1-3) and never looked back on their way to a 60-12 win.
Geneva quarterback Marcial Brock completed seven of eight passes to seven different receivers for 151 yards and five touchdowns. Christopher Budde rushed four times for 64 yards, and Christian Lipe carried the ball three times for 61 yards and a TD.
