Hot, humid day after record rainfall for Central Texas

Central Texans can expect hot and humid temperatures today after heavy rains Tuesday and Wednesday set record totals and brought scattered flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

The high today is forecast to be 94 degrees, but it will feel more like 104 degrees, forecasters say.

Meteorologists expect water levels to continue to recede today, reducing concerns of additional flooding along creeks and rivers, weather service meteorologist Clay Anderson said. Rain chances are at 20 percent but are expected to decline into the week as high pressure builds in and brings higher temperatures, Anderson said.

“It is just going to be hot and nasty,” Anderson said.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine helped Camp Mabry set a 24-hour rain total Tuesday with 7.04 inches, Anderson said. The previous 24-hour record was 3.11 inches in 1923, he said.

By Wednesday, another half-inch of rain brought the 48-hour rain total to 7.55 inches at Camp Mabry, Anderson said.

At Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, the 24-hour total reached 3.54 inches Tuesday, with more than a half-inch Wednesday for a total of 4.32 inches, Anderson said.

But other parts of Central Texas saw much more rain. The hardest-hit area appears to be near Georgetown, which saw more than 12 inches of rain, Anderson said. Areas close to Cedar Park and areas south of MoPac Boulevard (Loop 1) and William Cannon saw totals of more than 10 inches, he said.
