Lake Travis rises 2 feet after rainstorm: higher lake levels expected

Tropical Storm Hermine dropped approximately 12 inches of rain below Mansfield Dam overnight, from Sept. 7 to Sept. 8, according to a Lower Colorado River Authority news release. At the peak of the rainstorm, the LCRA had to open five floodgates at the Tom Miller Dam to pass water from Lake Austin downstream to Lady Bird Lake. The floodgates were closed by 5 a.m. Wednesday, and there were no further floodgate operations along the Highland Lakes.

According to the LCRA, Lake Travis has risen more than 2 feet, to just above 668 feet above mean sea level, and is considered full at 681 feet above mean sea level. The lake is expected to rise at least another foot by the end of the week, but that number could increase substantially based on heavy flows now being seen in the Pedernales River, which flows into Lake Travis, the news release said.

Rainfall totals in the Lake Austin area include about 11.5 inches in the Bull Creek watershed and more than 12.5 inches at the upper end of Lake Austin below Lake Travis. Rainfall totals in the upper Highland Lakes above Mansfield Dam were less, ranging from 2 to 5 inches, according to the LCRA.

A flood warning is in effect in Travis County until 12:30 p.m. Sept. 9. A flash flood watch is in effect for Bastrop, Blanco, Caldwell, Hays and Travis counties until 6 p.m. Sept. 8.
