Local groups tie high water bills to WTP4

Local organizations are using a proposed water rate hike to build opposition to the City of Austin's Water Treatment Plant No. 4 and its transmission line.

Austin City Council approved construction of the plant last year. In an effort to meet growing water demands, the plant will draw and treat water from Lake Travis at a facility in northwest Austin. The cost of the project and where construction of the transmission lines will take place has drawn some controversy.

The Sierra Club, Save our Springs, the Austin Neighborhood Council and others have set up SaveWaterSaveMoney.org to fight the plan.

The groups say the proposed rate hike for Austin Water Utility wouldn't be necessary if it weren't for the cost of the planned water treatment plant. Under the proposal, a typical rate payer would spend nearly $4 more per month on the water bill.

A public hearing on the proposed water rate hike is scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday at Austin City Hall.
